Chandigarh: Sept. 2, 2012
Earlier this year, in February, playing
at the home court, Sanam won his first ITF title, and later went on to claim a
hat-trick of ITF titles, and showed his repertoire
When the All India Tennis Association (AITA) announced the Davis
Cup team for the Asia/Oceania Group I tie, the name which the people from
Chandigarh was hoping to see was not Yuki or Vardhan, neither Myneni, but of
the local lad Sanam Singh on the list. Ever since Sanam made his Davis Cup
debut against Uzbekistan in April earlier this year, and the way he was racking
up medals at the ITF circuit, it was evident, rather ominous, that Sanam's
place in the India Davis Cup team was safe.
Sanam’s inclusion into the Indian Davis Cup team has made him the
only player from Chandigarh to represent India at the inter-country tournament
at the home ground.
Those who have closely watched Sanam taking his first gentle steps
on the green courts or smashing the first shot off the racquet, the news has
been a pleasant one.
"It is a proud moment for Sanam," shared Kanwaljeet
Singh, tennis coach, who has seen Sanam play tennis ever since his early days.
"Every player dreams of playing for the country and Sanam is living that dream.
It is a huge achievement for him. Also, it is a good opportunity for him and
the others to cement their place in the Indian team by performing well against
the Kiwis. Given the fact that it should not be a tough tie, I am sure the boys
will fare well."
