ISL: Coach Gregory pays with job for Chennaiyin FC’s poor run

Two-time Indian Super League (ISL) champions Chennaiyin FC have today (Saturday) announced parting ways with head coach John Gregory, who had led the side to league title  in the 2017-18 season. The 65-year old Englishman has seen the side endure a nightmarish run in the 2018-19 season when they finished at the bottom of the standings. The team is having a lacklustre run in the ongoing season as well, managing just one win from six matches. They drew two and lost three games. The club has shared the development with an official statement on its twitter handle. Club Statement: Chennaiyin FC part ways with John Gregory https://t.co/V3p2MTrAes — Chennaiyin FC (@ChennaiyinFC) November 29, 2019 “The club would like to sincerely thank John for his services. Man City deal is great news for Indian football: Amrinder Singh

Mumbai City goalkeeper Amrinder Singh has described City Football Group’s acquisition of his club as “momentous”, saying it will provide a massive boost to the sport in the country. English Premier League champions Manchester City’s parent company City Football Group on Thursday bought a majority 65 percent stake in Indian Super League (ISL) franchise Mumbai City FC. This is the first time a top European club has acquired a majority stake of a club in India, and the development is also expected to bring its renowned manager, Pep Guardiola, closer to the country. “I feel this is a momentous deal. This is indeed a great moment for football in India and all the young players who are emerging to play the sport,” Amrinder said. “We have seen in the last four or five years how rapid the progress has been in Indian football after the emergence of the ISL. I believe City Football Group coming to India can only take football forward in our country.” With this deal, Mumbai City joined an el

AIFF Technical Committee disappointed at India’s results against Bangladesh and Afghanistan: Thapa

The Technical Committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Friday expressed disappointment at the national team’s performance against Bangladesh and Afghanistan which sent the country out of reckoning of a 2022 FIFA World Cup berth. India drew with Bangladesh (at home) and Afghanistan (away) with identical 1-1 scoreline in the World Cup second round qualifiers to remain at fourth in their group with three points from five matches. India’s chances of advancing to the third round are virtually over. The Technical Committee, however, accepted head coach Igor Stimac’s explanation that he got very little preparation time ahead of the away matches against Afghanistan and Oman. “We told Stimac that India played well against higher-ranked opponents Qatar (0-0 draw in Doha) and Oman (1-2 loss in Guwahati and 0-1 loss in Muscat). But we were disappointed with the performance against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. We told the head coach that we should have played more attacking footba

Mithun takes 5 wickets in an over as K’taka beat Haryana; face

Pacer Abhimanyu Mithun, openers Devdutt Padikkal and K L Rahul starred as defending champions Karnataka romped into the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy after thrashing Haryana by 8 wickets in the first semi-final at Surat on Friday. Karnataka will now face Tamil Nadu, who defeated Rajasthan by seven wickets in the second semi-final, in the summit clash, to be played on Sunday. The highlight of the Karnataka-Haryana match was Mithun (5/39) taking five wickets in an over including a hat- trick and registering his name in the record books. Mithun became the first bowler in the domestic circuit to claim hat-trick in all the formats. He had snared a hat-trick in the Vijay Hazare (national ODI championship) final against Tamil Nadu earlier this year. The right-arm speedster did not have a good time until he bowled his last over in which he wreaked havoc. In the 20th over, he dismissed Himanshu Rana (61) and Rahul Tewatia (32) off the first two balls and completed his hat-trick by

Enough time to decide on Dhoni’s future: Ganguly

The BCCI President Sourav Ganguly on Friday said that there’s enough time to decide on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s future and things will get clearer in a few months time. When Ganguly was asked to comment on India head coach Ravi Shastri’s reported remarks that IPL 2020 will give a clear picture on Dhoni’s future, he said: “We will see what happens, there’s enough time. Of course it will get clear (within three months).” Dhoni, who has not played after India’s semifinal exit in the World Cup in July, has so far refused to talk much regarding his future. At an event in Mumbai on Wednesday, Dhoni had said questions regarding his return to cricket should only be asked after January 2020. But Ganguly said there was “absolute clarity” among the team think-tank on how to deal with Dhoni’s future. “No no, there is clarity, but certain things cannot be said on public platform. There is absolute clarity on MS Dhoni and you’ll find out in time,” Ganguly said on the sidelines of a felicitation c
