Covid-19: UEFA to debate options for ravaged football calendar

UEFA will hold a video conference on Wednesday this week with its 55 member federations as part of discussions on the potential rescheduling of matches postponed due to the coronavirus crisis, European football’s governing body announced on Monday. The meeting will see UEFA share an update on the progress made by the two working groups that were created two weeks ago in response to the crisis caused by the pandemic and following the decision to postpone the European Championship by a year. “The meeting will look at developments across all UEFA national team and club competitions, as well as discussing progress at FIFA and European level on matters such as player contracts and the transfer system,” UEFA said in a statement. UEFA previously stated its wish to finish the current season by June 30, the date when many players’ contracts expire. Carrying the season on beyond that date runs the risk of clubs losing their out-of-contract players before matches have been completed, unless

IOC advises caution to IFs, says no immediate plans for rescheduling remaining Olympic qualifiers

New dates for the Tokyo Games will ease the pressure to immediately reschedule the remaining qualifiers, said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday, making it clear that no qualifying event will be held unless “fair access” and “appropriate preparation” is provided to the athletes. The IOC on Monday announced July 23 to August 8, 2021 as the new dates for the Tokyo Games. The governing body had postponed the showpiece event last week due to the rapidly-spreading COVID-19 pandemic. It was after all sporting activities, including the Olympic qualifiers across the globe, were brought to a halt due to the coronavirus outbreak which has so far killed nearly 35,000. “With the postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 until July 2021, we have removed the pressure regarding the need to immediately reschedule the remaining qualification events, and we will take the necessary time and be prudent in the rescheduling of these events with the relevant IFs,” IOC said in a statem

COVID-19: If Australian travel ban stays for 6 months, India’s tour could be affected

The Australian government’s decision to seal its border for the next six months owing to the COVID-19 pandemic could adversely affect India’s Futures Tours Programme (FTP), including the much-awaited face-offs Down Under later this year. India’s tour of Australia is to begin with a T20 tri-series in October and end with the Tests in December. In between is the World T20, scheduled for an October 18 start, but the mega-event’s future is also shrouded in uncertainty due to the global health crisis. In Australia, there has been over 2000 positive cases along with 16 reported deaths, prompting the government to seal the country’s borders. The Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI, in all likelihood, might have to explore alternate plans amid the pandemic that has so far claimed over 30000 lives across the world. While the BCCI is yet to take a final decision on this edition of IPL, the international calender will be another cause of concern as there are tours of Sri Lanka (ODIs and T20s), Zimbabwe

CA defers announcement of players contract list by a month due to COVID-19 pandemic

The announcement of Cricket Australia’s players contract list has been deferred by at least a month due to the rapidly-spreading COVID-19 pandemic. According to a report in ‘Sydney Morning Herald’, Cricket Australia had “planned to bring forward the announcement of contracts from May to April this year, in a bid to provide more certainty to the states given the flow-on effect.” “But that plan has been put on hold for now until the end of April, given the economic uncertainty due to the pandemic,” the report said. “The Australian Cricketers’ Association agreed to the move.” The coronavirus outbreak, which has so far claimed more than 30,000 lives globally, has brought all cricket activities to a halt with Australia calling off their domestic Sheffield Shield, besides cancelling the three-match ODI series against New Zealand after the first game.
