IPL 2020 to start on March 29; Mumbai Indians in opener: Report

The Indian Premier League 2020 will reportedly start on March with defending champions Mumbai Indians opening their title defence at the Wankhede Stadium. A Delhi Capitals official has reportedly confirmed this to the IANS news agency. An early start is proposed to get rid of too many double headers. “I am told that the 2020 edition of the IPL will start on March 29 at Wankhede,” the official has told the news agency. However, the March end starting schedule will deprive the teams of the services of their Australia, England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka players as some of the players might be occupied with their national team duties. Australia and England are scheduled to finish their bilateral series on March 29 with the last T20 International. They means the players engaged in the match will need at least a couple of days’ time to join their respective IPL teams. England will finish their Test series against Sri Lanka on March 31. If the Test goes the full length, the players engag

Railways beat Maharashtra for national kho kho title

Maharashtra fell short of glory in the finals as Railways clinched the men’s final title while Airport won the women’s title in the finals of the of the Chhattisgarh Amateur Kho Kho Association-organised 53rd Senior National Kho Kho Championships at Allons Public School Ground at Bemetara on Monday. The men’s event witnessed a close encounter between the defending champion Maharashtra and last year’s runner-up Railways. Maharashtra fought hard but Railways eventually managed to win the title by a margin of single point with one minute to spare on the clock. Railways’ Vijay Hazare was exceptional on both ends of the mat as he defended for more than two minutes and also clinched 4 crucial wickets for the team in their 15-14 win against Maharashtra. The Maharashtra women also played a nail biting match against last year’s runner ups Airport Authority of India (AAI) but much like their male counterparts, they too could not finish with a win. The women lost the finals 8-9 to the Airport

Kumble prefers wicket-taking fast bowling options over all-rounders in T20 World Cup

Former captain Anil Kumble feels the Indian team’s focus should be on exploring wicket-taking options even if that means playing more fast bowlers than all-rounders in the T20 World Cup. India will be playing more T20 Internationals in 2020 in order to prepare for the T20 World Cup in Australia starting in October. “I certainly believe that you need wicket taking bowlers and someone like a Kuldeep and Chahal need to be a part of that in my view. Yes, there are instances where you know the ball gets wet because of the dew, then is it right for two wrist-spinners to be there,” Kumble told ‘CricketNext’. “It is very important that you need to start looking out for wicket taking options. If it means that you need to bring in just fast bowlers who you believe will pick up wickets, rather than looking at all-rounders, which I think this team is looking for; I think that’s the critical aspect,” India’s highest wicket-taker in Tests and ODIs added. According to him, the important factor is

It’s too early to say: Ganguly on four-day Tests

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly on Monday said it’s “too early” to comment on the ICC’s proposal to make four-day Tests mandatory as part of the World Test Championship from 2023. “First we will have to see the proposal, let it come and then we will see. It’s too early to say. Can’t comment just like this,” Ganguly said at the Eden Gardens when asked about his views on four-day Tests. The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) cricket committee will formally consider trimming Tests to four days from five for the 2023-2031 cycle. The ICC wanting to stage more global events, the BCCI’s demands for an expanded bilateral calendar, proliferation of T20 leagues around the world and cost of hosting a five-day game are some of the factors contributing to the need for a four-day game. A four-day Test is not a new concept with the last one played between England and Ireland earlier this year. South Africa and Zimbabwe too played one in 2017. Ganguly also gave no update on the formation of the

Chess Federation president and secretary make counter-claims on Lahiri-Barua controversy

The fight between All India Chess Federation president P Venketarama Raja ad secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan intensified after the Special General Meeting in Bhopal on Saturday pertaining to issues with regards to Bengal Chess Association (BCA). The president’s faction through a press release claimed that GM Dibyendu Barua’s allegations of misappropriation of funds levelled against BCA secretary Atanu Lahiri has been rejected at the SGM. However Chauhan said that there will be an independent inquiry by a retired High Court judge against Lahiri. The AICF President and Secretary have been loggerheads over various issues. In a press release issued by AICF treasurer Kishore Bandekar, who belongs to Raja faction, claimed that Chauhan was feeding false stories in the media. “Bharat Singh is feeding false stories in media and without taking views of the president it is carrying his falsehood,” it stated. “Lahiri accused Bharat Singh and Barua in the meeting of defaming him and has filed a

Bengal keep Dinda out of squad vs Gujarat

Bengal pacer Ashok Dinda was once again kept out of the squad for their upcoming Ranji Trophy Elite Group A fixture against Gujarat here from January 3 as the selectors named a 16-member squad on Monday. The Bengal pace spearhead Dinda, who has represented India in 13 ODIs and 9 T20 Internationals, was dropped from the Bengal Ranji Trophy squad on the eve of their match against Andhra after he “abused” bowling coach Ranadeb Bose after a pre-match practice session and refused to apologise. “Based on team management’s views, the selectors did not consider Dinda for inclusion in the team at this stage,” CAB joint secretary Avishek Dalmiya said. Bengal bowling attack missed Dinda as they had to settle for three points on basis of their first innings lead. The state selectors also roped in uncapped lefthanded batsman Kazi Junaid Safi in place of struggling Sudip Chatterjee. Bengal have slipped to seventh place with nine points from two matches in the Elite Cross Pool. Bengal Squad: Abh

Justice (Retd) Deepak Verma is DDCA ombudsman

Justice (Retd) Deepak Verma will be the Delhi and District Cricket Association ombudsman. The former justice of the Supreme Court of India will replaced Justice (Retd) Badar Durrez Ahmed, former Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court. The DDCA on Sunday has appointed Justice (Retd) Deepak Verma as its new ombudsman during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Delhi. The AGM, first in 18 months, was marred by violence and uproar. A DDCA release stated that all the members unanimously “passed all the resolutions and agendas” but sources in the controversy-plagued cricket body informed that the AGM had its share of drama. “Honourable Justice Deepak Verma (Retd) was appointed as the new Ombudsman by the members,” the DDCA release said. “There were five agendas for the meeting –passing of annual accounts, appointment of statutory auditors, reappointment of retiring directors, adoption of new articles and appointment of Ombudsman,” it added. Braving the chilling cold, members

Conflict complaint against Rangaswamy, Gaekwad rendered ”infructuous”

BCCI ethics officer D K Jain has rendered the conflict of interest complaint against former cricketers and CAC members Shantha Rangaswamy and Anshuman Gaekwad as “infructuous” but the case involving Kapil Dev has still not been decided. Jain had called Rangaswamy, Gaekwad and Kapil for a personal hearing on December 27 and 28 even though all three had stepped down from the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) in September and October, following the complaint filed by Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) life member Sanjeev Gupta. Gupta had claimed that all three don multiple cricketing roles, when as per the BCCI constitution, no person can occupy more than one post at the same time. “Since they (Gaekwad, Rangaswamy) have resigned from their respective posts, the complaint has been disposed of. In Kapil’s case, the complainant needed more time to file an application, I have given him that,” Jain told PTI on Sunday. Rangaswamy, who like Gaekwad is on the BCCI apex council, is no mo

Cannot put a timeline when I will get fit: Bhuvneshwar

India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is not sure when he will make a comeback to competitive cricket as it is yet to be ascertained whether a surgery is required to treat his sports hernia. The senior seamer, who is expected to be out for an indefinite period of time, doesn’t want to blame the National Cricket Academy for allegedly bungling his rehabilitation. He, though, is a bit surprised as to why his hernia couldn’t be detected earlier. “World T20 is still good nine months away. I am not thinking about that. First thing is getting fit and I don’t know when I will get fit,” Bhuvneshwar told PTI in an exclusive interview. Asked about the NCA’s role, the 29-year-old was predictably defensive and said it’s best the BCCI brass deals with it. “It’s up to BCCI as to how they are going to take it. They must have had a chat with the NCA. “NCA must have tried their best but I don’t know what went wrong and why they couldn’t diagnose. Still I am not the right person to comment on that as it mi

Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy becomes women’s World Rapid champion

Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy claimed the World Women’s Rapid Chess Championship title after drawing the Armageddon game against Lei Tingjie of China. The 32-year-old Indian made a stunning comeback, winning the 12th and final round game against another Chinese Tang Zhongyi, to force the tie breaker against Tingjie. “When I started my first game on Day 3 I did not imagine I would be at the top. My hope was to reach top three. I didn’t expect to play the tie-break games,” said Humpy, who had taken a two-year sabbatical from 2016 to 2018 after she became a mother, in an interview with FIDE. “I lost the first game on time but came back in the second game. It was a gambling game, but I won. In the final game, I had a better position and it was a comfortable win.” Starting as the thirteenth seat, Humpy scored 9 points in all to match Tingjie and Ekaterina Atalik of Turkey. Humpy had a good beginning to the event scoring 4.5 points in the first five rounds, and then a loss against Iri

DDCA forms disciplinary panel to probe incident involving two U-23 players

The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Sunday formed a four-member disciplinary committee to probe the incident involving two U-23 players who were called back for allegedly misbehaving with a woman in a hotel before a match. The incident happened at a Kolkata hotel, a day before the Delhi U-23 team’s CK Nayudu Trophy match against Bengal. The committee will be headed by Shiv Nandan Sharma, a former Superintendent of Customs and Central Excise, and will also comprise Alok Mittal, Apurv Jain and Sudhir Aggarwal. Mittal is a Chartered Accountant. “The decision to form the committee was taken at the AGM today,” DDCA’s senior official Ravi Jain told PTI. The two players in question are Kuldeep Yadav and Lakshay Thareja, who were on Friday sent home for their alleged misconduct. Batsman Thareja has, in fact, played a List A match for Delhi and scored a half-century while pacer Kuldeep was set to replace Ishant Sharma in Delhi’s next Ranji game against Punjab. The unsavo

Stepped in to stop religious discrimination against Kaneria by ”one or two” players: Akhtar

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has said he stepped in to stop discrimination based on religion against Danish Kaneria, who was targeted by “one or two” team-mates because he is a Hindu. Akhtar on Thursday had claimed that Kaneria faced discrimination at the hands of a few Pakistani players, who were reluctant to even eat with him. Kaneria supported Akhtar’s claim, saying there were a “few players” who targeted him for being a Hindu during his time with the national team but never felt the urge or the pressure to change his religion. “We, as a society, should realise that this should be nipped in the bud. I am a product of this society and I did that. I had told them (the players) I will throw you out if you talk like this (about Kaneria’s faith). Because this is not our culture,” Akhtar said in his Youtube channel on Saturday night. “There is unwritten contract that we got to respect every player no matter what. But there was some hesitation shown by a few players but th
