Cometh the hour, cometh Shubman

Gaurav Joshi Christchurch, January 30 Remember the name Shubman Gill — it’s likely that you’re going to hear it a lot in the future. As the announcer at the Hagley Oval today read out the names of the Indian team, a fan turned around and asked his friend: “Bhai ye Gill kaun hai? Who’s this Gill?” Six hours later, the pair was leaning over the picket fence and posing for a selfie with Gill, the new star of Indian cricket. Gill’s century played a big part in taking India to the final of the Under-19 World Cup with a massive 203-run win over Pakistan in the semifinals. Through to the final Apart from captain Prithvi Shaw, the extremely ‘patriotic’ expat fans of the team here were not familiar with the names of the Indian players. But in a span of merely two hours, Gill become the crowd favourite. The fans even had a chant for him — shouts of ‘Lagao Gill bhai lagao! (Strike the ball!)’ echoed around the ground as the India No. 3 scored a masterful 102 not out. Good start After losin

It’s his best knock, says proud father

Sunny Kaul   Tribune News Service Chandigarh, January 30 As Shubman Gill shepherded India colts to their sixth ICC U-19 World Cup final with an unbeaten ton against Pakistan at Christchurch today, his father Lakhwinder Singh said it was the “best innings” of his fledgling career. “It left me speechless,” said Gill senior, who’s also the coach of his son. “This is his best innings till date. It left me speechless. Playing in a semifinal against Pakistan and hitting a century... it speaks volumes about his temperament. It was a mature knock, I am really proud of his performance.”  Gill has exhibited great form in the tournament so far, aggregating 341 runs in four innings. The 18-year-old started with a solid 63 against Australia in the opener, and then followed it up with unbeaten 90 against Zimbabwe and a 94-ball 86 against Bangladesh in the quarterfinals.  “He has been consistent, has grabbed every opportunity that came his way. I always had some suggestions to offer after his ev

Pointless sports policy hurts cop-players

Rachna Khaira Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 30 Sportspersons employed by Punjab Police have won many battles at the international level over the years, but they seem to be losing them all back home. Three international players employed with Punjab Police have given consistent performances since 2013, but their efforts to get the ‘flaws’ removed from the department’s sports policy, in order to be promoted, have yielded no results. After taking over in February this year, the Congress-led government had announced that it would formulate a new sports policy, but its draft is gathering dust with the Home Department since then. Ironically, even this proposed policy did not hold out much hope for the sportspersons already employed with various state government departments. Shiva, Mary enter semis at India Open

New Delhi, January 30 MC Mary Kom (49kg) and Shiva Thapa (60kg) were among the prominent names assured of medals as the Indian boxers continued to dominate in the inaugural $100,000 India Open here today. Seeded 12th, five-time world champion Mary Kom had no trouble in beating compatriot K Bina Devi. The 35-year-old prevailed 5-0 in a lopsided contest, her nimble footwork standing out. Also advancing was L Sarita Devi (60kg). Sarita edged past Thailand’s Peamwilai Laopeam in a 4-1 decision and set up a clash with Priyanka Chaudhary. Priyanka defeated Indonesian Huswatun Hasanboy 5-0. In the evening session, former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manoj Kumar (69kg) struck some lusty left hooks en route a 5-0 win over compatriot Pawan Kumar to enter the semifinals. World Championships bronze medallist Thapa beat Uzbekistan’s Sherbek Rakhmatulloev. The top seed started off on a cautious note and spent the first three minutes getting a measure of his rival. Worlds medal has given me confidence: Bidhuri

Vinayak Padmadeo Tribune News Service New Delhi, January 30 For a competition bereft of star power, Gaurav Bidhuri stood out. But India’s newest World Championships medallist wasn’t in the ring. For the last two days, the bantamweight (56kg) pugilist has been watching from the sidelines as senior international boxing returned to these shores after over a decade. The 24-year-old, who took a two-month break after his World Championships bronze medal in August-September last year, fell ill just weeks before the ongoing India Open and had to sit out of the $100,000 event.  “I was supposed to take part in this competition but I was down with viral fever for 10 days,” said Bidhuri, who became the fourth Indian male to win a medal at the Worlds after Vijender Singh, Vikas Krishan and Shiva Thapa. “I am feeling a little left out as this event is happening in India. To perform in front of home crowds is another feeling,” he added. “Look how the crowd is cheering for the Indian boxers. I w

ICC gives a ‘poor’ to Wanderers strip

Dubai, January 30  ICC today expectedly rated the Wanderers pitch used for the third Test between India and South Africa as ‘poor’ and received three demerit points in the process. India came back from behind to win the Test by 63 runs as 40 wickets fell for 805 runs in almost 296 overs. However the 22-yard strip was the focus of attention as a number of batsmen from both the sides received blows due to “steep unpredictable bounce and excessive seam movement”. The play was in fact stopped by the on-field umpires on the third day as they found it dangerous to continue when Jasprit Bumrah’s bouncer struck Dean Elgar’s helmet. “Andy Pycroft of the Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees has rated the Wanderers pitch as “poor” and, as such, according to the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, it has received three demerit points,” ICC stated in a media release. As per the norms, one demerit point is awarded to venues whose pitches are rated by the match referees as “below average”, whi

Tai Tzu can be beaten: Saina

New Delhi, January 30 World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying might have proved to be a nemesis for Saina Nehwal but she believes the Taiwanese is not unbeatable and exuded confidence of defeating her in due time. Tai Tzu, who clinched five titles last year, has defeated Saina nine times in the last 10 meetings with only three of the matches going into the deciding game. Last Sunday, Saina suffered her seventh straight loss to the Tai Tzu in the Indonesia Masters final. “You see the number of tournaments she has won last year, so it is not only the Indians who are losing to her. She is the best player right now, she is tricky, she is focussed and consistently reaching the finals and we have to look up to her,” Saina said. “I think the top 15 players are doing well. There are some players who are not comfortable against her but it is not that we can’t beat her. Tai Tzu almost lost to Michelle Li in the first round at Indonesia, so we will have to figure out a way to beat her. I think it is a matter

India beat Pakistan in U-19 World Cup; to face Australia in final

Christchurch, January 30 India entered the final of the U-19 cricket World Cup after thrashing arch-rivals Pakistan by a massive 203 runs in the semifinals here on Tuesday. India will now meet Australia in the summit clash on February 3. Australia had beaten Afghanistan by six wickets in the first semifinals yesterday. He is the team's leading scorer with 341 runs. The defeat was Pakistan's heaviest (in terms of runs) in a U-19 World Cup match. Aussies end Afghans’ brave run

Christchurch, January 29 Australia sauntered into the final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup by halting Afghanistan’s dream run with a six-wicket victory, built around Jack Edward’s half-century and a splendid bowling show today. Electing to bat, the team from the strife-torn nation posted a modest total of 181, which was never going to be enough against three-time champions Australia.   Had it not been for wicketkeeper-batsman Ikram Ali Khil’s brave 80 off 119 balls, Afghanistan would have struggled to reach even 150. Despite his fighting knock, Australia faced little trouble in knocking off the required runs, with opener Jack Edwards producing a solid 72-run knock.  Off-spinner Mujeeb Zadran, picked up by Kings XI Punjab at the IPL auction, provided an early breakthrough by dismissing opener Max Bryant (4). Afghanistan managed to dismiss captain Jason Sangha (26), caught and bowled by leg-spinner Qais Ahmad, and Jonathan Merlo (17) early but Australia took these setbacks in their str

Semis-solid: India lock horns with Pak

Christchurch, January 29  After bagging lucrative deals at the IPL auction, the Indian colts will be eager to deliver when they face archrivals Pakistan in the semifinals of the ICC U-19 World Cup here tomorrow. Three-time champions India have played like a professional outfit, winning all four matches in an emphatic fashion, including the quarterfinal against Bangladesh. For two-time winners Pakistan, it has not been smooth sailing all the way. They lost their tournament opener to Afghanistan before winning three in a row. Moreover, the last two wins against Sri Lanka and South Africa have been close and hard-fought. Pakistan’s bowling, led by left-arm pace sensation Shaheen Afridi, has done the job for the team but batting has been far from convincing.       Ali Zaryab Asif has done the bulk of scoring in the middle-order, rescuing the side from tight situations twice. He hit 59 against Sri Lanka, and followed it up with a gritty 74 against South Africa in the quarterfinals. High

Clubs accused of foul play, AIFF livid

Vinayak Padmadeo Tribune News Service New Delhi, January 29 The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is ready to read the riot act to several I-League clubs as issues of non-payment of salaries, delay in issuance of No Objection Certificate (NOC), dual contracts and fielding overage players have started to line up at its doorsteps. There are several complaints against the clubs, including Minerva, who have been dragged to the AIFF Player Status Committee (PSC) for non-issuance of NOC and non-payment of players’ salary. Arnab Das Sharma, Germanpreet Singh, Victor AmobiOzoanibueze, Amarjeet Mishra, Shubham Sarangi and Ravi Kumar are few of the Minerva Academy FC players who have alleged wrongdoing on the part of the club. Minerva are not alone. DSK Shivajians, too, have been reported to PSC for similar violations. Three of their players (Jerry Lalrinzuala, Rakshit Dagar and Baiklian Paite) had alleged that the club failed to pay them. Calling it a “repeat offender”, PSC has referre

‘Bumrah will struggle in England’

Johannesburg, January 29 West Indies legend Michael Holding has serious doubts over Bumrah’s ability as a new-ball bowler. The former pacer said Bumrah’s specific skills do not make him an automatic choice in the playing eleven during India’s tour of England later this year. “I am not sure he is going to be a good new-ball bowler. He struggles to take the ball away from right-handers when bowling with new ball. So he wouldn’t be my first choice (on overseas tours). My first choice would always be Bhuvneshwar,” said Holding.  “Then I would think about Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami. When India play in England, pitches will be drastically different to those in South Africa. I wouldn’t play Bumrah because he bangs the ball in. On those pitches, you need bowlers who get the ball kiss the surface and move it around.”  Playing his maiden Test series, Bumrah picked his maiden five-wicket haul in the third Test. “He hits the deck hard and that’s why he got those two wickets in Centurion a

Federer has ‘no idea’ how long he will go on

Melbourne, January 29 Age-defying Roger Federer says after winning his third Grand Slam title in a year he has “no idea” how long he will continue playing. The 36-year-old Swiss marvel continues to defy the years and attrition rate, reaching his 30 th Grand Slam decider and claiming his sixth Australian crown and 20 th Grand Slam title. The world No.2 won back-to-back Australian Opens by beating Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 on Sunday, dropping his only sets of a stress-free tournament. Federer, who downed great rival Rafael Nadal in a classic five-set Australian final last year, eased through this year’s event with five of his seven matches finishing on or under two hours and he spent just a total of 13hr 53min on court. Asked after his Melbourne triumph how much longer he can continue at the summit of men’s tennis, he replied: “No idea. Honest, I don’t know. I have no idea. “I’ve won three slams now in 12 months. Christchurch, January 29 Australia sauntered into the ICC Under-19 World Cup final by halting Afghanistan’s dream run with a six-wicket victory, built around Jack Edward’s half-century after a splendid bowling show, here on Monday. Electing to bat, the strife-torn nation, put on board a modest 181, which was never going to be enough for the three-time champions. It was wicket-keeper batsman Ikram Ali Khil, who resisted the Australian attack with a brave 80 off 119 balls, helping his side put on board something to fight for. Australia had no trouble in knocking off the required runs with opener Jack Edwards producing a solid 72-run knock at the top. They won by 75 balls to spare. Off-spinner Mujeeb Zadran, picked up by IPL franchisee Kings XI Punjab for the next edition, had provided an early breakthrough by dismissing opener Max Bryant (4) but Australia had more than able line-up to handle Afghanistan challenge. Captain Jason Singha (26) was caught and bowled by leg-spinner Qai

Saina done in by Tai Tzu’s deception, again

Jakarta, January 28  Saina Nehwal suffered her seventh straight defeat to world No. 1 and old nemesis Tai Tzu Ying, going down in the summit clash of the $350,000 Indonesia Masters. Playing the final of an international tournament after a year, Saina, who is coming back from an ankle injury, failed to lift the veil of deception woven by Tai Tzu and went down 9-21 13-21 in 27 minutes in a completely lop-sided final. Tai Tzu has now defeated the former world No. 1 Indian nine times in their last 10 meetings. Saina had enjoyed early success against the Taiwan player till 2011 but the Indian has beaten her only once after that, at the 2013 Swiss Open. The world No. 12 was no match for Tai Tzu, who toyed with Saina with her supreme agility and deceptive returns. The Indian committed too many unforced errors. Tai Tzu jumped to a 10-2 lead early on. Saina grabbed a point after dominating a rally but the Taiwan player entered the break with a comfortable 11-3 lead. Saina gathered a few poi

I want to play for 1-2 years more: Mary

New Delhi, January 28 London Olympics bronze medallist Mary Kom saw off Varsha Choudhary in her opening round match of the India Open International Boxing Tournament. The veteran did a professional job, barely hitting the top gear, as she won 5-0 in a unanimous decision. Varsha started with a flurry but Mary used all her experience to shut her out to enter the last eight in the 48kg category. After her win, the 35-year-old said she intends to stay in the ring for at least a couple of years. She added that she had her sights on the 2020 Olympics. “I want to be an active boxer for other one or two years. Till then, I will try to do my best,” she said after her win. “There is a lot of talk about how I have aged and I may not be able to perform because of that. But it doesn’t matter to me. I will train harder and try to do well. In sports, you win some and you lose some. I don’t feel bad about what people say behind my back,” she added. Mary Kom was circumspect talking about her long ti

IPL gets its first player from Nepal

New Delhi, January 28 Sandeep Lamichhane has become the first cricketer from Nepal to land an IPL contract. He was picked by Delhi Daredevils in the auction here today. The 17-year-old, the only Nepal player in the auction, was sold at his base price of Rs 20 lakh.  The leg-spinner rose to prominence following a successful outing at the 2016 U-19 World Cup where he helped Nepal finish a creditable eighth.  He finished as the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 14 scalps in six innings with an economy rate of 4.67. Lamichhane even picked up a hat-trick, against Ireland, becoming only the fifth bowler to achieve the feat in the under-19 World Cup. His five-wicket haul helped Nepal register an eight- wicket win over Ireland and enter the knockout stages for the second time in their seventh World Cup appearance. His performance caught the attention of former Australian captain Michael Clarke, who picked him to play alongside him for Kowloon Cantoons in the Hong Kong T20

Unadkat finds Royal deal surreal

New Delhi, January 28 Overwhelmed by a “surreal” bid, it took Jaydev Unadkat some time to believe that franchises were willing to break a bank to grab him. “When my name came up for biding, I was hooked to live streaming for the next 15 minutes and found it surreal. The entire team stopped training to watch my bidding,” said Unadkat, who had been training with his with his Saurashtra teammates in Rajkot for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. He became the costliest Indian player at the auction when Rajasthan Royals shelled out with Rs 11.5 for him.  The 26-year-old Saurashtra left-arm seamer has played one Test, seven ODIs and four T20Is for India. In the last one year, he has done very well in the shortest format. He did not expect franchises to splurge on a fast bowler since Rs 10 crore-plus deals have always been offered to batsmen or all-rounder. “Honestly, I did not have any amount in mind. The past two years have been pretty good for me and after last year’s IPL (24 wickets), I

I-League: East Bengal hold leaders Minerva Punjab to 2-2 draw

Kolkata: Brandon Vanlalrmdika’s 89th minute goal kept East Bengal’s hopes alive helping them snatch a 2-2 draw against leaders Minerva Punjab at the Barasat Stadium on Tuesday. It however kept the Chandigarh based club undefeated in Kolkata this I-League, which means they stay at the top, six points clear of East Bengal, who stand on 20 points after 12 games. Minerva has played a match less. But the 2-2 draw seemed far from being a result when Minerva went ahead 2-0 after 33 minutes and East Bengal didn’t look a side capable of pulling out both the goals back. That a lot has happened at the Kolkata club ever since that 2-0 derby defeat to Mohun Bagan nine days ago stood as a proof, when Jamil introduced seven changes to the team that started in the derby. Minerva’s alterations were two. Fullbacks Mehtab Singh and Deepak Kumar who last started in December 3, made a return and so did Salam Ranjan Singh at the back. They, however, remain at the bottom on 10 points from nine games. But confident on their current run forward Koffi Mechec warned, “we can beat anybody in the league.” Neroca on the other, come on the back of consecutive home defeats, a first for them after an unbeaten run of nine games. They are still second with 21 points from 12 games, but another los
