Real from Kashmir make I-League history

Tribune News Service Chandigarh, May 30 Good Kashmir news from the sporting world — Real Kashmir Football Club, barely 18 months after inception, has created history by becoming the first Kashmiri club to qualify for the I-League. Real Kashmir FC won the I-League 2nd Division League title today, beating Delhi-based Hindustan FC 3-2 in Bengaluru on the final day of the division league season. The team needed only a draw to win the title and promotion to I-League, but they did it in style, winning 3-2. The Kashmir Valley team finished with seven points — from two wins and one draw — from three matches in the final round. Real Kashmir got into the lead through Ifham Tariq Mir in the 22nd minute, but Kushant Chauhan equalised for Hindustan in the 34th minute. However, strikes by Danish Farooq (42nd) and Nadong Bhutia (67th) put the Kashmir outfit decisively ahead. Chauhan scored his second goal for Hindustan in the 80th minute, but it wasn’t enough to derail the dreams of the club from

We will get to bottom of fixing allegations: ICC Chief Executive

London, May 31 The International Cricket Council (ICC) says it will meet representatives of the channel that claims to have unearthed ‘spot-fixing’ and ‘pitch-fixing’ in Test matches through a sting operation, insisting that the allegations will not be brushed under the carpet. The Qatar-based Al Jazeera has claimed that pitches of matches involving India, Sri Lanka, Australia and England were doctored at the behest of match-fixers. The matches in question were India vs Sri Lanka (Galle, July 26-29, 2017), India vs Australia (Ranchi, March 16-20, 2017) and India vs England (Chennai, December 16-20, 2016). The ICC while launching an investigation, said that the news network was refusing to share the unedited footage of the sting, a claim also reiterated by the Boards of England and Australia. But ICC Chief Executive Dave Richardson said they are set to meet Al Jazeera officials very soon.    “I am always concerned if people are talking about fixing in cricket. I am a little pertur

Djokovic all over the place

Paris, May 30  It is just as well Novak Djokovic did not choose archery or shooting as his preferred sport. Instead of a small circular board or a flying skeet to aim at, Djokovic has half a tennis court to use as his target. At the French Open on Wednesday, however, Djokovic’s shots often failed to hit the bullseye. The once all-conquering Serb started off by serving a fault, ended the opening game with a double fault and fired plenty of wayward shots wide and long as he tried to subdue Spanish qualifier Jaume Munar. While the scorecard will show that Djokovic eked out a straightforward-looking 7-6(1) 6-4 6-4 victory, those following the action on a sweltering Court Suzanne Lenglen will know the second-round win was anything but easy. “I went through my ups and downs and I’m not really satisfied with the performance. I just played enough in the right moments to win the match,” admitted 20th seed Djokovic, who is still trying to rediscover his golden touch since undergoing elbow sur

Super Serena and her superhero catsuit

Paris, May 30  A marvel on the tennis court, new mum Serena Williams is now sporting her own superhero outfit as she makes her return to Grand Slam tennis. “I call it like my Wakanda-inspired catsuit. It’s really fun,” the American laughed, referencing the fictional Sub-Saharan African nation which is home to superhero Black Panther in Marvel Comics. “I feel like a warrior in it, like a warrior princess kind of, queen from Wakanda maybe,” she said smiling, following her opening round victory over Kristyna Pliskova at the French Open on Tuesday. “I’m always living in a fantasy world. I always wanted to be a superhero, and it’s kind of my way of being a superhero. I feel like a superhero when I wear it.” Behind the jokes, there is also a more serious reason for the choice of skin-tight bodysuit outfit for the American who only had her daughter last September. Serena has spoken about health concerns over blood clots in the days after giving birth, and on Tuesday said: “Yeah, the catsui

Last shot at glory?

Argentina last won a major title 25 years ago and while the prospect of ending that drought has looked so close in recent years it now seems a distant prospect. Argentina last picked up silverware at the 1993 Copa America, when Gabriel Batistuta and Diego Simeone were playing. They reached the finals of the World Cup in 2014 and the Copa America in 2015 and 2016 but lost all three, the first in extra-time to Germany, the other two to Chile on penalties. Since then, they have gone backwards, with the Argentine Football Association in turmoil and three national team managers in three years unable to get the best out of unquestionably one of the world’s most star-studded squads. After settling on Jorge Sampaoli, the Argentine coach who won the Copa America with Chile in 2015, they have yet to find their groove despite having talisman Lionel Messi to call on. One win in four competitive games tells its own story and narrow victories over World Cup hosts Russia and Italy, who have surpris

They next face second seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic. Another Indian in the second round is Rohan Bopanna, with his partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Messi leads Argentina to 4-0 win

BUENOS AIRES, May 30  Argentina showed once again how reliant they are on Lionel Messi as the Barcelona forward scored a hat-trick in their 4-0 World Cup warm-up win over Haiti on Tuesday. With Javier Mascherano making his 143rd appearance to put him one ahead of Javier Zanetti as Argentina’s most-capped player, Messi got the opener from the penalty spot after 17 minutes. He doubled their lead 12 minutes into the second half with a simple tap-in after the goalkeeper could only parry a header, scored Argentina’s third after 65 minutes, and then set up Sergio Aguero to make it four just two minutes later. Argentina failed to add to their tally but should have been further ahead against Haiti, whose sole appearance at the World Cup finals came in 1974 and are ranked 108th in the world, 103 places below them in the world rankings. “More than the result we were able to say goodbye to our fans and show that we are going to Russia with hope,” Messi said. “We’re not going as favourites be

Gowda goes, just before Asian Games

New Delhi, May 30  Discus thrower Vikas Gowda today retired after competing at the highest level for more than 15 years, during which he became the first and only Indian male athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the discipline. The retirement of the four-time Olympian, who will turn 35 on July 5, has not come as a surprise as he has not taken part in any major international event since winning a bronze in the Asian Championships last year in Bhubaneswar. His retirement was announced by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on its Twitter page after Gowda informed it of his intent to call it quits.  “After a lot of thinking and consulting, I have decided to retire from athletics. I do not want to punish my body anymore and I want to focus on the next phase of my life,” said Gowda, who is based in the United States. “It was an honour and privilege to represent India and I will forever miss it.”  The Mysore-born Gowda’s family moved to Maryland, USA, just before he turned six

Now, kabaddi players breach Rs 1 crore barrier

Mumbai, May 30  On a day that saw the making and breaking of records at the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) players’ auction, five Indian and one foreign player entered the Rs 1 crore club with raider Monu Goyat being the most expensive after being snapped up by Haryana Steelers for a whopping Rs 1.51 crore. On Wednesday, the first of the two-day PKL auction here, several records were made, only to be broken within minutes.  Earlier, Deepak Niwas Hooda became the first Indian player to cross the Rs 1 crore mark as Jaipur Pink Panthers paid an astounding sum of Rs 1.15 crore to bag his services for the league’s sixth edition. Nitin Tomar, who was last year’s costliest player with a price tag of Rs 93 lakh, also commanded a bid of Rs 1.15 crore, from Puneri Paltans. No HC relief for Minerva’s banned Bajaj

New Delhi, May 30 The Delhi High Court today directed banned Minerva Punjab FC owner Ranjit Bajaj to approach the All India Football Federation’s Appeals Committee for the revocation of his suspension while disposing off his writ petition. Earlier this month, AIFF had banned Bajaj for one year from all football activities and also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh after it found him guilty of making racist remarks against a referee. The incident happened during Minerva’s U-18 Youth League play-off match against Aizawl FC that ended in a 1-1 draw at the JLN Stadium in Shillong on May 12. It is learnt that the court, while refusing to entertain Bajaj’s plea, directed him to approach the AIFF’s Appeals Committee. The court has given him two weeks’ time to do so. Bajaj, on his part, said, “The HC has given AIFF six weeks’ time to hear and decide on our four pending appeals before the AIFF Appeals Committee.”  The AIFF Disciplinary Committee, while slapping the sanctions, said it was the fou

Corruption goes right to the top: Arjuna

Colombo, May 30  World Cup-winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga on Wednesday said corruption “goes right to the top” in Sri Lanka and accused the International Cricket Council of undermining the game by failing to tackle match-fixing.  Ranatunga, now a minister, said cricket corruption in Sri Lanka went far beyond the claims made in an Al Jazeera documentary which aired on Sunday. Ranatunga said the allegations must be investigated, “but this must have been happening for a long time”. “This is something that goes right to the top (in Sri Lanka). What they will catch is a small fish. As usual the bigger fish will get away,” he said. “I am so disappointed with the ICC anti-corruption unit. If they can’t see what is happening in Sri Lanka, they should not sit on this anti-corruption unit.” — AFP  https://ift.tt/2xwb6qA

Anand holds Nakamura to an easy draw

Stavanger (Norway) Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand played out an easy draw against American Hikaru Nakamura in the second round of Altibox Norway Chess tournament. After conceding a draw with white against Levon Aronian of Armenia, Anand had the favour returned, although he had to work relatively harder to maintain parity against Nakamura, often termed as his nemesis. For the record, the American went for a rare sixth move in the Queen’s Gambit and Anand admitted he was “confused a lot” by this approach. However, the move didn’t do much damage as Anand got into a healthy position with some strategic manoeuvres.   Colombo Court stays Sri Lanka cricket board election   The Court of Appeal in Sri Lanka has stopped the election in Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), scheduled for Thursday.
