Balance, the key for Kohli

Cape Town, December 30 India feel they have the right balance in their squad to break new ground and win a series in South Africa for the first time, to underline their top ranking in Test cricket, captain Virat Kohli said on Saturday. “Our best result here has been a drawn series in 2010-11 but I feel the kind of bowling attack we have now and the balance we have in the side, we definitely can win here. There are no two ways about it,” he said as India began their preparations for the first Test at Newlands in Cape Town, which starts on Friday. “We come here believing in our abilities and knowing we have the right balance to win Test matches under any conditions. We aren’t thinking about the history of past series in South Africa but concentrating on winning each session and executing our strategy well. I think international cricket is all about staying in the present and trying to do things better than your opposition at all times. If we didn’t have that mindset, there would be no

India up for challenge against SA: Shastri

Cape Town, December 30 The current Indian team has the experience and bench strength to challenge the might of South Africa in the Test series starting January 5, India coach Ravi Shastri said. Shastri said adaptability to foreign conditions will be the key to success for the visitors. “All I can say is the team is up for the challenge. If you asked me four years ago, I would have said no. But this team has gained in experience,” said Shastri. “The beauty of this team is it does not matter which opposition it is playing. We look at the pitch and adapt to those conditions. You have got bench strength in your fast bowling department which is the key to taking 20 wickets,” he added. Asked whether India’s fast bowling strength will give the curators second thoughts about preparing spicy pitches, Shastri said, “For us every game is a home game. Even this is a home game for us at the Newlands. You see the pitch, you adapt. No excuses, no complaints. Both the teams have to play on that su

Gurbani’s hat-trick rocks Delhi

Indore, december 30 Wasim Jaffer guided Vidarbha to 206/4 with an unbeaten half-century after seamer Rajneesh Gurbani scythed through Delhi’s lower-order for a rare hat-trick in their Ranji Trophy final. At stumps on Day 2, Jaffer was batting on 61 off 120 balls and Akshay Wakhare was yet to open his account as Vidarbha trailed by 89 runs. In-form seamer Gurbani (6/59) rocked seven-time winners Delhi by removing three batsmen in as many balls in the second morning. Gurbani became only the second man to claim a hat-trick in the final of India’s premier domestic competition. Gurbani bowled out Vikas Mishra, Navdeep Saini and Dhruv Shorey off successive balls in two separate overs. What made the feat even more commendable was that Gurbani, bowling the hat-trick ball, was up against a batsman who was nearing 150. Tamil Nadu’s B Kalyanasundaram was the first man to take a hat-trick in the Ranji final, against Mumbai in 1972-73. Shorey’s 145 On 123 overnight, Shorey laced his innings wi

Smith, dead wicket deny England

Melbourne, December 30 Australia captain Steve Smith tormented England with another century as the fourth Ashes Test ended in a frustrating draw for Joe Root’s side on a lifeless Melbourne Cricket Ground pitch on Saturday. Smith marched off unbeaten after a 275-ball knock of 102, having nudged Australia to 263/4 and a lead of 99 runs before the captains called it off midway through the final session. No. 6 batsman Mitchell Marsh was as stubborn as his captain, scoring 29 from 166 balls to protect his wicket through the last two sessions. Dead wicket The unyielding drop-in pitch may have been England’s biggest obstacle, however, refusing to offer their bowlers any encouragement in terms of pace, movement or turn. “I don’t think it’s good for anyone,” Smith told reporters of the wicket after his third century of the series.  “There was absolutely nothing in it for the bowlers. I’m enjoying (batting), shame we had to call it off in the last hour, I could have had another hour out the

Goodbye 2017, hope ’18 is as good: Federer

Perth, December 30 At the fag end of possibly the most amazing year of his storied career, Roger Federer has indicated that though he’s in his 37th year, he has no plan to stop playing. “I always hoped, when I became the world No. 1 for the first time in Melbourne in 2004, that hopefully, I’ll be able to play for a long time,” Federer said today at the Hopman Cup. “And if that’s the goal, I’d have to do it this way... If I have only one more year to play, then I’d just go all out and forget about fitness, almost, and just play tournaments instead of going to the practice courts.” He said the injury he suffered in Australia in 2016, which led to a six-month layoff, impacted his thinking. “I (originally) thought I was just going to be able to play freely through my career and just do it till the end,” he said. Changed mindset “But through the injury I sustained here a couple of years ago, my mindset has changed,” he said. “I think I have to be more careful about my planning... I was

Wrestler Sushil Kumar, supporters booked for brawl

New Delhi, December 30 Olympic-medallist Sushil Kumar was on Saturday booked by Delhi Police in connection with a clash between his supporters and those of rival wrestler Parveen Rana at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here, the police said. (Follow  The Tribune on Facebook ; and  Twitter @thetribunechd ) Kumar and his supporters have been booked under IPC Section 341 (wrongful restraint) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), the latter attracting an imprisonment of up to one year or a monetary fine of Rs 1,000 or both, police officials said. Read: Rana bares his fangs, bloodied Sushil wins The supporters of the two wrestlers on Friday engaged in an ugly clash and came to blows during the selection trial for the Gold Coast Games, to be held in April next year. Kumar had won all his bouts but things took an ugly turn when Rana, after losing to the former in the semifinal clash, claimed that the decorated wrestler’s supporters beat him and his elder brother “for daring to take the

Smith ton frustrates England as fourth Ashes Test ends in draw

Melbourne, December 30 Australia captain Steve Smith tormented England with another century as the fourth Ashes test ended in a frustrating draw for Joe Root’s side at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday. Smith marched off unbeaten after a 275-ball knock of 102, having nudged Australia to 263 for four and a lead of 99 runs before the captains agreed to end the match midway through the final session. Number six batsman Mitchell Marsh was as stubborn as his captain, scoring 29 from 166 balls to protect his wicket through the last two sessions, though the unyielding pitch may have been England’s greatest enemy as it declined to offer their bowlers any encouragement. With Alastair Cook finding form with an unbeaten 244, the tourists can perhaps claim a moral victory after their batsmen built a first-innings lead of 164 runs. But they will still head into the fifth and final test 3-0 down in the series and desperate for a face-saving win at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Smith, havi

Rana bares his fangs, bloodied Sushil wins

Vinayak Padmadeo Tribune News Service New Delhi, December 29 There was blood on the mat and outside as well. On a day when Sushil Kumar stamped his class over all his younger opponents, including Parveen Rana and Dinesh Kumar, a few of his supporters took the shine away from his gladiatorial performance. Rana and his elder brother Naveen were beaten up by a group of people, allegedly for fighting against Sushil, the two-time Olympics medallist and Rana’s mentor from the Chhatrasal Stadium akhada. The incident happened minutes after Sushil, blood dripping from a wound below his left eyebrow, won a very physical fight against Jitender of the Railways in the 74kg category. The tough 3-2 win bagged Sushil an automatic ticket for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the Asian Wrestling Championship. Drawing blood Before beating Jitender, Sushil beat Rana 7-2 in the most controversial bout of the day. Rana bit Sushil twice on his right forearm, seemed to be trying to injure his knee, and t

Shorey smashes ton but Delhi far from comfort zone

Indore, December 29  Displaying steely resolve, Dhruv Shorey struck an unbeaten century to steer Delhi to 271/6 at the end of Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha here today. The 25-year-old Shorey walked out to the middle in the very first over of the match following the dismissal of opener Kunal Chandela. He survived testing opening spells by the Vidarbha seamers before opening up, and eventually finishing the day at a 256-ball 123, his third first class century. He added 105 runs for the fifth wicket with Himmat Singh, who struck a fluent 66 off 72 balls with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes. Considering they lost both their openers, Chandela and the seasoned Gautam Gambhir, inside the first hour of play, Delhi would be quite satisfied with how they finished the day. Maybe Himmat would be a little disappointed, for he looked in superb touch before a dubious caught-behind decision cut short his promising knock. For Vidarbha, who would also be happy with the

Rain halts England’s push for victory

Melbourne, December 29  England rejected ball-tampering allegations as a “beat-up” as rain frustrated their push for their first victory of the Ashes series against Australia here today. Alastair Cook carried his bat for a record unbeaten 244 before David Warner, unbeaten on 40, and captain Steve Smith, on 25, defied the visiting bowlers on a rain-truncated day. When the umpires called off play after persistent rain, Australia were 103/2 and trailing by 61 runs with a day remaining. “Any time there’s a bit of rain and you’re on top in the game, it’s a bit frustrating, but we’ve got an opportunity tomorrow to win and that’s the attitude we’ve got to take,” said England coach Trevor Bayliss. “We showed in the first innings that we can take a number of wickets reasonably quickly. So, 98 overs tomorrow, it’s more than enough time if we play well to force a result.” Bayliss also slammed claims of tampering after footage of James Anderson working the ball with his thumbnail drew suspicion

King of rapid chess is back

Riyadh, December 29 Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand regained the World Rapid Chess Championship after defeating Russia’s Vladimir Fedoseev in the tie-break play-off. Anand, a former world champion, outclassed world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the ninth round of the tournament and was placed joint second at the start of the final five rounds. He then defeated Fedoseev 2-0 in a two-game tie-break after a three-way tie with the Russian and Ian Nepomniachtchi at 10.5 points each from a possible 15. The Indian claimed the title by remaining unbeaten in the championship with six wins and nine draws.  The win for Anand has come after a tough year. The 48-year-old had earlier failed to qualify for the Candidates Tournament to decide the challenger for the World Championship match against Carlsen and then finished last in the London Chess Classic. Slow start in World Blitz Championship On Friday, Anand won two and drew four rounds to make a slow start to his campaign at the World Blitz Ch

I was pessimistic, surprised myself: Anand

Chennai, December 29  Relieved after claiming his first World Rapid Chess title after 14 years, Viswanathan Anand said he entered the tournament in a “pessimistic” frame of mind but managed to surprise himself and the world with an unbeaten campaign. “The last two rapid events were nothing short of disasters. I came here in a pessimistic frame of mind. But it has just been the most wonderful surprise. But I played well,” Anand said after his triumph.  Anand said he had a particularly tough year coming into the event in Riyadh. “...especially the London (Chess Classic) tournament was a big disappointment. It is not that I had high expectations of London, but still I expected to do well. To finish in the last place was a heavy blow.” Anand said he felt good on the first day of the tournament here as he played well and it reminded him of his glory days. “It was on the first day that I felt I was playing well. It was as if time had stood still. I was back in time a few years when I wa

This Cookie refuses to crumble!

Melbourne, December 28 Alastair Cook reeled off a record-breaking double century to put England in full command of the fourth Ashes Test with a formidable 164-run lead here today. The stoic opener emphatically bounced back after a lean run of scores to finish the day unconquered on 244 off 409 balls. At the close, England were 491/9.  Along the way, Cook surpassed the highest score by a visiting batsman in a Test match at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground, bettering the 208 by West Indian great Viv Richards in 1984. He earlier bettered Wally Hammond’s 200, back in 1928, as the highest Test score at the MCG by an Englishman. Cook’s fifth double-century in 151 Test matches also catapulted him above West Indian Brian Lara to become the sixth highest run-getter in Test cricket with 11,956 runs. Australia, who already have won back the Ashes with an unassailable 3-0 lead, looked unable to stop the flow of runs in the final session as Stuart Broad supported Cook to take the game away fr

Last session will be crucial against India, says Morkel

Cape Town, December  28 South Africa pacer Morne Morkel feels the last session of the day will be crucial for the home side to inflict damage on the Indian batsmen in the three-match Test series beginning on January 5. “It’s going to be about that last session in the day when the ball is soft and conditions are tough,” Morkel said. “Majority of the runs in Test cricket are scored after tea. So for us, it’s going to be if we have enough petrol in the tank to knock India over at the back end of the day.”  Morkel claimed his first five-for in five years in South Africa’s one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Port Elizabeth, which the Proteas won inside two days. Despite being the most successful seamer in the match, he faces the risk of missing out against India when Dale Steyn returns. If South Africa stick to a frontline attack of three seamers and a spinner at Newlands, Morkel may have to watch the action from the sidelines. Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander are almost certain to make th

Delhi stand between Vidarbha and Ranji title

Indore, December 28  A win away from their maiden Ranji Trophy title, Vidarbha are ready to face a battle-hardened Delhi in the final beginning here tomorrow. Delhi will take the field as favourites, though Vidarbha, given their fantastic run this season, are certain to put up a stiff challenge. “We are focused on the job at hand. We know we will have to play really well to win the match,” Delhi skipper Rishabh Pant said on the eve of the match. Delhi will rely heavily on their seasoned opener Gautam Gambhir, who has played a crucial role in the team’s progress to the final. While he smashed a crucial 95 in the fourth innings in the quarterfinal against Madhya Pradesh, he cracked a game-changing century against Bengal in the semifinal. His opening partner Kunal Chandela, too, struck a century in the semifinal. In the middle-order, Nitish Rana has been rock solid for Delhi. Pant, who has been given the reins of the team in the absence of Ishant Sharma, has had an average season, so he

Zim’s takeaway from huge loss: Focus on limited-overs format

PORT ELIZABETH, December 28 Zimbabwe might concentrate on the limited-overs formats to be more competitive in the wake of a devastating defeat by South Africa in their one-off Test at St George’s Park on Wednesday. The bottom-ranked Test nation were beaten by an innings and 120 runs inside two days in the inaugural four-day Test against their neighbours. Coach Heath Streak said Zimbabwe’s infrequent Test schedule made it near impossible to compete against top countries like South Africa. “Maybe there is an argument for us to focus a lot more of our resources and time into short-format cricket to give ourselves more of a realistic chance of competing at a higher level rather than hanging around near the bottom of the table,” he said. Streak said if Zimbabwe were to play more Tests, they might have to settle for games against the likes of newcomers Afghanistan and Ireland. “I think if you get a bit of context to the Test rankings, with an incentive to get to the next level, with maybe

Manchester City on a roll

Newcastle, December 28  Manchester City surged 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League as Raheem Sterling fired the runaway leaders to a 1-0 win at Newcastle. Pep Guardiola's side look certain to lift the title after extending their Premier League record winning streak to 18 matches. Sterling’s 31st minute goal ensured City took advantage of second placed Manchester United’s costly draw with Burnley. The only club in Europe’s five biggest leagues to have had a longer winning run is Bayern Munich, who earned 19 consecutive victories under Guardiola in 2013-14. City can equal Bayern’s mark in their next match at Crystal Palace on December 31. Unbeaten City have also won a record-equalling 11 successive away matches in the English top-flight, a total matched only by Chelsea in 2008. Only Everton have prevented City from collecting maximum points this season, and ultra-defensive Newcastle, who for long spells had 11 men behind the ball, rarely looked like adding their nam
