Honorary Doctorate to Star chairman Uday Shankar

Star and Disney India chairman Uday Shankar has been honoured with an honorary doctorate for his contribution to media. Bennett University at its first convocation has conferred Uday Shankar with an honorary PhD in Media Management.

Uday Shankar has been an alumni of Times School of Journalism, and this degree will also make him alumni of Time Group-owned Bennett University. India’s iconic media head has started his career in journalism with the Times of India group. He then headed India’s No. 1 Hindi news channel editorial team as director news and now helms the Star Group in the country.

The Star India chairman and president (Asia Pacific) of the international consumer and international segment of the Walt Disney Company, Uday said journalism teaches one to be a very good observer.

“The other great skill that I acquired as a journalist was to understand and appreciate the power of asking questions. And I realized that the questions are fundamental, the answers are not,” said Uday at the convocation.

“Too many people waste their lives giving answers and many people who have created great value and made great contributions have done so because they have asked the right questions, he told the 43 graduates of the first two lots of MBA programs.”

Shankar began his career as a journalist in The Times of India before playing a pioneering role in the Indian television industry as CEO of Star India.

When conferring the honorary doctorate in media administration to Uday, Times Group MD and Chancellor Vineet Jain recalled his work as an innovative editor and a successful CEO.
