IPL 2020 : Will IPL 2020 in UAE get impacted as World Rugby 7’s event in Dubai is cancelled ?

UAE is gearing up to host 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020). According to the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) and Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), UAE currently is the safest destination to host the IPL 2020. But contrary to those claims, the world body of Rugby has announced cancellation of the World Rugby Seven Series in Dubai due to Covid19.

From the last few days UAE is registering on an average 350-400 new cases everyday and that led to the cancellation of the event by the World Rugby.

The question arises, when the country is not considered safe by the world body of Rugby for the event scheduled for Nov26th, how it is fit to host the IPL 2020 scheduled almost two months early on Sep19th ?

“Yes, we are aware that Rugby event has been cancelled, we are constantly in touch with ECB and they have assured country is completely safe for IPL 2020”, said one of the BCCI official.

It is for the first time in 50 years that the Dubai Rugby Sevens has been cancelled

“After a comprehensive consultation process and constructive dialogue with the host organisations, it has been decided that the combined men’s and women’s Dubai and Cape Town rounds of the [Series], will not take place,” World Rugby said.

“The decisions were taken in line with relevant government and international public health authority advice, and with the health and wellbeing of the rugby community and the wider public taking precedence.

“Both hosts are due to return to a full series schedule beyond this season.”

InsideSport reached out to the Emirates Cricket Board to check its official take on the development. According to the ECB official, they are constantly in touch with the government officials and see no issue in successfully and safely hosting IPL 2020 in UAE.

Mubashshir Usmani, the ECB’s secretary general said, “UAE everything has opened up. Things are completely in control. We don’t know the exact reason of why Rugby 7’s has been cancelled but we are constantly in touch with the government officials here. And stay assured, we will successfully and safely host IPL 2020 in UAE.”

According to the latest data released by UAE Government on Wednesday 375 new Covid-19 cases were detected in UAE. Overall in UAE 60,223 people have tested positive for Covid19 and out of that 53,626 have already recovered. UAE also has reported 349 casualties till date.

IPL  2020 Governing Council meeting on Sunday, will the matter discussed ?

According to the BCCI official InsideSport spoke to, the health security situation and counter-measures will be discussed in the IPL GC meeting scheduled for Sunday. The source further informed InsideSport that, though BCCI will be responsible to keep everyone safe, secure once the team steps in the IPL 2020 stadiums, it will be the responsibility of the franchises to create their own BIO-BUBBLE to keep their teams safe in the hotels and otherwise.

The board will handover Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’S) guidelines to the franchises and other stakeholders either on Sunday or Monday next week.
