ICC to refer $23.7 million claim from BCCI to disputes panel

In a major positive for the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the International Cricket Council has agreed to refer the matter of the $23.7 million claim from the BCCI to the international disputes panel.

The ICC had earlier threatened direct action against the BCCI.

The matter relates to statutory tax payments for the 2016 Cricket World Cup, hosted by India. Since the Indian Government had declined to waive the levies, ICC was compelled to pay the tax. ICC has since been claiming that it was the host nation’s obligation to get the tax relief and that the BCCI should take the cost.

However, at the first meeting attended by Sourav Ganguly as the BCCI president the world governing body for cricket has agreed for dispute resolution by the international panel, national daily Hindustan Times has reported.

The ICC board met via teleconference on Friday.

The ICC earlier had threatened to recover the amount form the BCCI’s annual revenue.

It had also threatened to take away rights to host events if any member board fails to get tax waiver. The communique was being seen as a warning to the BCCI, which will host the ICC T20 World Cup next year and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Meanwhile, the ICC will also keep an eye on the T20 World Cup scheduled in Australia from October 18 and review the situation at the Board’s next meeting in May.
