New Delhi, april 27
Finally the Delhi Daredevils batting line-up showed up for a match. Two upcoming batting stars, Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer lit up the Delhi sky as Delhi team that didn’t seem to catch a break in any of the last three matches, suddenly scored 219 against Kolkata Knight Riders, the highest score this season.
The score set the tone of the match and ensured that the home team broke the run of three-successive losses and registered a 55-run at the Ferozshah Kotla.
Kolkata team was never in the chase as Chris Lynn was dismissed in the second over of the chase. Only Andre Russell showed enough application to score 40. He and Shubman Gill put together a 64-run partnership for the fifth wicket to give Kolkata some hope. But with Gill’s run out ended all hopes for the Dinesh Karthik’s side.
Lynn and Robin Uthappa couldn’t get going. Lynn played down an innocuous delivery from Glenn Maxwell onto his stumps, while Uthappa was pouched by Shaw after he mistimed his pull off Trent Boult.
Sunil Narine, who started the innings with a flurry of sixes, was caught in the cover after shaping to hit a short delivery off Boult. Nitish Rana too mistimed a short delivery and gave a simple caught and bowled chance to Avesh Khan.
And suddenly, the bowling line up that was struggling to check the run rate during the powerplay overs for the first six games, looked world class.
Skipper Karthik gave an easy catch to Boult at point, while trying to hit Amit Mishra over covers. With this dismissal Delhi became the firm favourites to win. Gill’s dismissal slowed down Russell’s hitting prowess too as Kolkata’s chase tailed off in the last five overs of the innings.
Iyer carves Kolkata
Earlier, the new captain Iyer lit the Delhi sky with ten sixes, including five off the last over bowled by young pacer Shivam Mavi to propel Delhi to 219. Iyer scored an unbeaten 93 off 40 balls as Delhi finally showed their batting might. The Kolkata team aided Iyer’s cause as he was dropped twice in the last overs.
