Gold rush for India at Asian youth boxing but no Oly berths

Bangkok, April 27

World champion Nitu Ghanghas led the charge as the Indian women boxers dominated the Asian Youth Championships, claiming three gold medals.

Nitu (48kg) out-punched local favourite Nillada Meekoon in front of a partisan crowd to claim the first gold for India, following which Manisha (64kg) and Lalita (69kg) also won their gold medal bouts. Settling for silver medals were lone male finalist Ankit Khatana (60kg) and Anamika (51kg), Sakshi (81kg) and Neha Yadav (+81kg). Overall, the Indians signed off with three gold, four silver and four bronze medals in the event, which was also a qualifying tournament for the Youth Olympics later this year.

As for qualification to the Youth Olympics, none of the Indian boxers could make the cut for Buenos Aires as they did not win gold medals in the categories that would feature at the Games. Four women’s weight categories — 51kg, 57kg, 75kg and 60kg — will feature at the Buenos Aires Games and from the ongoing event, only the gold winners in these categories have qualified.

He will be up against Greece’s Vagka Nanitzanian in the semifinals. Also advancing to the semifinals was former junior world champion Nikhat Zareen (51kg). Nikhat made the semifinals after beating Russia’s Liliya Aetbaeva.
