Shorey smashes ton but Delhi far from comfort zone

Displaying steely resolve, Dhruv Shorey struck an unbeaten century to steer Delhi to 271/6 at the end of Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha here today. The 25-year-old Shorey walked out to the middle in the very first over of the match following the dismissal of opener Kunal Chandela. He survived testing opening spells by the Vidarbha seamers before opening up, and eventually finishing the day at a 256-ball 123, his third first class century.

He added 105 runs for the fifth wicket with Himmat Singh, who struck a fluent 66 off 72 balls with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes. Considering they lost both their openers, Chandela and the seasoned Gautam Gambhir, inside the first hour of play, Delhi would be quite satisfied with how they finished the day.

Maybe Himmat would be a little disappointed, for he looked in superb touch before a dubious caught-behind decision cut short his promising knock.

For Vidarbha, who would also be happy with the proceedings on the opening day, debutant seamer Aditya Thakare and Rajneesh Gurbani picked two wickets apiece. Thakare gave his team a head start when he removed Chandela in the first over, inducing an edge for skipper Faiz Fazal to take the catch at the first slip. Vidarbha soon broke into another round of celebration when off-spinner Akshay Wakhare bowled Gambhir (15). With the openers back in the dressing room, Delhi needed a partnership but Vidarbha struck again, with Thakare trapping Nitish Rana (21) LBW.  Delhi slipped to 99/4 when skipper Rishabh Pant fell to Gurbani for 21.

Delhi now desperately needed a good partnership and Himmat and Shorey provided just that — the duo gathered 105 runs for the fifth wicket to pull their team out of trouble. The partnership ended with Himmat’s dismissal but Shorey stood firm, helping Delhi inch closer to the 300-run mark. — PTI
