Youth Boxing Nationals: Hry girls, SSCB boys shine

Rohtak, March 30

Haryana's women boxers won six gold medals, while SSCB pugilists dominated the men's section, winning nine gold medals out of ten at the 2nd Youth National Boxing Championship here on Friday. Haryana's Joni (60kg), who got the better of World Youth champion in the semis, was in her element again. She demolished her opponent to clinch the gold with a comprehensive 5-0 score.

"I had missed out on the World Youth Championships as I had lost in the final last year. So I worked really hard to win the Nationals this year," said Joni. "I've done my bit and, hopefully, I will get selected for international tournaments in the future."  In the 57kg weight category, WYC gold medallist Sakshi dominated the summit clash to emerge as the national champion.

In the men's category, SSCB boxers ruled the roost by winning nine out of ten finals. Only one of their boxers, Satender Singh (81kg), faltered in the final. "This performance shows our ability to produce world beaters. We have a history of producing top boxers and these young boys will carry that legacy forward."  — PTI
