New Delhi, March 30

The dope cloud over Khelo India School Games (KISG) continues to grow as one more athlete has flunked the dope test. A key member of Punjab's gold-winning basketball team has tested positive for methandienone, an anabolic steroid, and has been provisionally suspended. He faces a maximum suspension of four years if he fails to establish that the violation was not intentional.

The cager, who trains at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy, played a key role in Punjab's 78-76 come-from-behind win over Delhi in the Games.  The now suspended player had been picked for the forthcoming FIBA under-16 Asian Championship, scheduled to be held in Foshan, China, where was expected to play a vital role.

In a letter dated March 14, NADA director general Navin Agarwal notified the athlete of the anti-doping rule violation. "The AAF (adverse analytical finding) in your A Sample has been reviewed and it has been determined that you have a case to answer for a violation of article 2.1 ADR," Agarwal wrote.

"You are hereby formally charged with the commission of an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) for the presence of methandienone metabolites, androgenic anabolic steroids in a sample provided by you on February 8," the letter read.

Further, the athlete had not been issued a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) to justify the presence of the substance in his system.

Earlier this week, as many as 12 under-17 athletes, including four wrestlers, three boxers, two gymnasts and one each from judo, volleyball and athletics, were notified for adverse analytical findings.  Many of them had tested positive for furosemide and terbulatine. While furosemide is a masking agent and a diuretic used for short-term weight loss, terbulatine is a drug used for treatment of asthma. One of the boxers tested for stanozolol, a performance enhancing drug.
