BJP Member of Parliament and former BCCI president Anurag Thakur was elected as the president of Himachal Hockey at a meeting held here on Friday. Thakur, who was already the general secretary of the organisation, was elevated to the top post after Congress leader Vidya Stokes was unanimously removed from the post due to her old age.
Thakur said Himachal had a lot of talent in hockey, with a couple of players having represented the country at the Olympics. He assured that the infrastructure for the sport would be developed, and a separate calendar would be chalked out to conduct hockey events in the state.
While appreciating the contribution of the ousted president in promoting the sport, Thakur said Hockey Himachal would keep consulting her as and when required.
Himachal Pradesh BJP president Satpal Singh Satti was nominated as a patron of the organisation, while Rajesh Bhandari was elected as a senior vice-president. Rajesh Sharma, Suman Puri and Rajesh Thakur were elected as vice-presidents of the hockey body.
Until recently, Thakur had been heading the state cricket body as well. He had to step down following a Supreme Court ruling.
