WORLD CUP 2018 LIVE: Messi, Ronaldo on Sony, SonyLIV as eliminations kick start

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, the two biggest icons of FIFA World Cup 2018 Finals in Russia will be in action as the knockout round games kick start today (Saturday).

In the opening day Round of 16 action, Messi’s Argentina is slated to take on the strong Group C leaders France at the Kazan Arena at 7:30 pm India time. Argentina somehow have managed to survive the elimination scare in the first round. Skipper Messi and Argentina have failed to live up to their class, reputation and expectations. From here on not the strongest, but the best performer of the day, will survive.

In the second game slated for the day, all eyes will be on tried and trusted Ronaldo – the real hero of Portugal, who are scheduled to meet Uruguay at the Fisht Stadium, Sochi, at 11:30 pm India time.

KNOCK OUT ROUND: Saturday, June 30: 

France vs Argentina @ Kazan from 7:30 pm India time

Portugal vs Uruguay @ Sochi  from 11:30 pm India time

Timing is now running out for Messi and his Argentina team to strike form. The team has exposed miserably in their Group stage, but for managing to prevail over Nigeria in the battle of survival to enter the next round.

Didier Deschamps’ France have remained unbeaten en route to the round of 16. The will be looking to keep the slate clean. Messi and Argentina yet again will start under pressure to deliver.

Argentina have won 6 and lost only 2 of their 12 World Cup meetings against France. However, at the big stage of the FIFA World Cup Finals, the performance on the day will count. The records are only for academic interest.

The second game of the day too will be a clash of reputation and form as Ronaldo and Portugal run into Uruguay, who on a winning spree have thrashed their all three Group A rivals – including hosts Russia – to cruise into the round of 16.

Ronaldo’s presence is the lone factor that will give France an edge over Uruguay’s strong attack line.

Luis Suarez and Ronaldo will be the men to watch as the two teams meet at Sochi in the second game of the day.
