SANDY STORM BLOWS AWAY SAURASHATRA
Medium pacer under -19 world cup winning teams member Sandeep Sharma bowled a dream spell of incisive medium pace bowling as he ripped apart a strong saurashatra batting line up for meager total of 90 on the opening day of the four day Ranji trophy match at PCA Stadium Mohali. Sandeep Sharma who, bowled in two spells of probing line & length bulldozed the Saurashatra batting line up. It was a delight to see him uprooting the stumps of B M Chauhan (29) A V Vasavada (3) and B N Jadeja (0) He troubled Ravinder Jadeja with his immaculate length and movement before trapping him in front for 5.
Mandeep Singh won the toss for Punjab and invited Saurashtra to bat who opened with C.R. Pathak and B.M. Chauhan.  Manpreet Gony and Sandeep Sharma opened the attack for Punjab.  Manpreet Gony drew the first blood for Punjab as he enticed an edge from C.R. Pathak to wicket keeper Uday Kaul when the batsman had scored 8 runs. At this stage B.M. Chohan was joined by S.D. Jogiyani and the duo took control of the situation and started stroking the balls to all parts of the ground and took the score to 74 when Sandeep Sharma coming for the second spell from North Pavilion end sent B.M. Chauhan’s stumps cart wheeling for 29 off 57 balls inclusive of 3 boundaries.  Chauhan’s dismissal signaled the collapse of Saurashtra innings.  Siddharth Kaul operating from the pavilion end castled S. D.Jogiyani for 41 off 50 balls inclusive of 8 boundaries.  Thereafter it was a regular procession to and fro from the pavilion as Sandeep Sharma and Siddharth Kaul hustled the batsmen to their doom.  Saurashtra innings finally ended at 90 off 27.1 over with Sandeep Sharma returning the flattering figures of 11-3-25-7 and Siddharth Kaul complimenting him with 8.1-2-18-2. It was a spectator’s delight to see the domination of ball over bat on a seam friendly track.
Punjab opened with Jeevanjot and Karan Goel and the two bated sedately before Karan Goel was snapped by wicket keeper S.D. Jogiyani off medium pacer Siddharth Trivedi for 26 off 68 balls inclusive of 4 boundaries. Trivedi struck again as he removed next man in Mayank Sidana by trapping him in front before the batsman could open his account. Jeevanjot who has been in fine nick was caught by S.M. Maniyar off J.D. Unadkat after making a stroke full  61 off 128 balls inclusive of 11 boundaries.  Punjab lost Mandeep Singh  (12) and Amitoze  Singh (0) cheaply.  At close of play Punjab were 125 for 5 off 52 overs with Bipul Sharma batting on 13 and Uday Kaul on 4.  S.M. Maniyar bowled a tight spell of 10-5-8-2.   He was ably supported by Siddharth Trivedi who got 2 wickets for 37 runs.
