Karnataka beat Saurashtra by 41 runs to clinch Vijay Hazare trophy

New Delhi: Cheteshwar Pujara’s valiant 94 went in vain as Karnataka clinched the Vijay Hazare trophy with a 41-run win over Saurashtra at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Tuesday.

Krishnappa Gowtham and Prasidh Krishna scalped three wickets apiece as Saurashtra were eventually bowled out for 212, chasing 253 to win their first domestic one-day title in a decade.

Right-arm medium pacer Prasidh gave Karnataka the perfect start to their defence in the second innings, sending back Samarth Vyas (10) and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (1), leaving Saurashtra reeling at 11/2. But a 62-run stand between wicket-keeper batsman Avi Barot (30) and skipper Pujara steadied the ship. The right-hander then added 24 runs with Ravindra Jadeja for the third wicket before which a middle-order collapse began, leaving Saurashtra in all sorts of trouble.

From being 101/4 at the 28-over mark, they were reduced to 135/8, as Pujara kept on running out of partners at the other end. But he still managed to add 65 runs with Kamlesh Makavana (20) to take his team closer to the total. His dismissal in 45th over left Saurashtra at 200/9 as they were eventually shot out for 212.

Earlier, the failure of captain Karun Nair and KL Rahul to open their account was overshadowed by another Mayank Agarwal masterclass as the stylish opener scored a sublime 90 of 79 balls with 11 fours and three huge sixes. Pavan Deshpande (49) and Ravikumar Samarth (48) made significant contributions as Karnataka ended up with 253 runs on the board. For Saurashtra, the best bowler was Kamlesh Makavana, who scalped four wickets conceding just 34 runs in the 8.4 overs he bowled.

Prerak Mankad took two wickets while Shaurya Sanandia and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja took one apiece.

Brief scores-

Saurashtra 212 all out in 46.3 overs (Cheteshwar Pujara 94, Avi Barot 30; Krishnappa Gowtham 3/27) lost to Karnataka 253 all out in 45.5 overs (Mayank Agarwal 90, Pavan Deshpande 49; Kamlesh Makavana 4/34) by 41 runs.
